Fulton Ryder to Close

Fulton Ryder, the secretive bookstore owned by artist Richard Prince, has announced via email that it will close its doors on Christmas of this year.  “Fulton Ryder was always meant to be an ephemeral space, an experimental venue for spontaneous creativity where things constantly changed and shifted,” says gallery head Fabiola Alondra. Whitney Museum to Remain Open for 36 Hours at End of Koons Exhibition

The Whitney Museum of Art will remain open for 36 consecutive hours at the conclusion of the museum’s Jeff Koons retrospective, running from 11 a.m. October 18th through to 11 p.m. October 19th, a last marathon run before the museum decamps to its new building downtown.  “This will not only give more people an opportunity to see the Koons retrospective, it’s also a chance for some to say goodbye to the Breuer building as it was,” says Whitney Director Adam Weinberg. Vienna’s Generali Foundation to Close

Vienna’s Generali Foundation is closing after 19 years in the Austrian capital.  The space has hosted shows by Isa Genzken, Dan Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Martha Rosler over its lifespan, and boasts one of the nation’s most prominent art collections, which will be placed on loan to Salzburg’s Museum der Moderne Kunst.

Government Shutdown Costs to Smithsonian Reach $2.8 Million

The Smithsonian Institution has tallied a total cost of $2.8 million caused by the government shut down this past month, including all gift shop and cafeteria revenues the museum normally takes in.  The museum was also forced to conclude a number of loans prematurely, including the rarely exhibited codexes of Leonardo Da Vinci.   (more…)

Detroit Institute of Arts Director Restates Sale of Museum Works Would Close Museum

Emphasizing the recent vote by Michigan’s Oakland County to withdraw support for the museum if any works were to be sold, DIA Director Graham W. J. Beal has stated in the September museum newsletter that “selling any art would be tantamount to closing the museum.”  Beal continues by questioning the valuation of the museum’s assets, particularly the Tintoretto ceiling painting in its lobby.  “You may have read in the Detroit Free Pressthat an expert valued the painting at $100 million. This came as a surprise to us as, a couple of years ago, for insurance purposes, a different expert assessed the painting at $2 to $3 million.”  He writes.

MoMA’s Rain Room To Stay Open Late on Final Night

In response to the massive public response drawn by its current Rain Room installation, the Museum of Modern Art will keep the work by Random International open until midnight this Sunday, July 28th, its closing day.  The work has attracted over 65,000 visitors since it opened in May, and has seen wait times of up to nine hours during busy days to stand inside the stream of pouring water. Harris Lieberman Gallery Closes

New York’s Harris Lieberman Gallery, which has operated in the city for 7 years has closed, after finishing its last show on June 15th. “We had a great seven years,” said co-founder Jessie Washburne-Harris, “but we decided it was time to make a change”  Ms. Washburne-Harris will join Metro Pictures as a director beginning July 15th. Nicole Klagsbrun to Close Gallery After 30 Years in Business

Dealer and gallerist Nicole Klagsbrun has announced that she will close her gallery after 30 years of operation, and will focus on smaller shows and artist representation.“I’m not sick and I’m not broke. I just don’t want the gallery system anymore,” Klagsbrun said. “The old school way was to be close to the artists and to the studios. Nowadays, it’s run like a corporation. After 30 years, this is not what I aspire to do. It is uninteresting.” (more…)

92YTribeca to Close

92YTribeca, a downtown arts and cultural space operated by the 92nd St. Y, will close this summer.  The decision was made by the 92nd St. Y board on Wednesday night, in order to focus operations on the primary location.  “We believe 92Y can best serve the community now and in the future by investing our resources into our flagship location uptown on Lexington Avenue.”  Says executive director Sol Adler. Haunch of Venison to Close New York and London Galleries

The Christie’s-owned Haunch of Venison Gallery has announced that it will close both its Chelsea and London galleries, and will focus exclusively on the secondary market.  While Christie’s owner Francois Pinault has not commented, some speculate that the galleries were never intended to be permanent in the first place.   (more…)
