Brooklyn Museum Director Arnold Lehman has announced that he will step down from his position at the museum next year, closing out 17 years at the helm of the borough’s chief art museum. “This has been something I have been thinking about for a while,” Mr. Lehman told the New York Times. “I turned three score and 10 this summer. The L.A. Times reports that LACMA will honor Barbara Kruger and Quentin Tarantino at its annual Art + Film gala in November. The article points out the similarities between Kruger and Tarantino’s work, highlighting their “artistic appetite for wordplay”. Toyko-born architect Shigeru Ban has been awarded with the 2014 Pritzker Prize, recognizing his work with low-cost emergency shelters and temporary structures at natural and man-made disaster sites around the world. “Receiving this prize is a great honor,” Ban says, “and with it, I must be careful. I must continue to listen to the people I work for, in my private residential commissions and in my disaster relief work. I see this prize as encouragement for me to keep doing what I am doing — not to change what I am doing, but to grow.” (more…)

The chairman of the Pace Gallery, Arne Glimcher, has been appointed to the rank of Officer in the National Order of the Legion of Honor by decree of the President of the French Republic. The highest honor bestowed on either French citizen or foreigner, Glimcher joins the ranks of fellow Americans Thomas Edison, Simon Newcomb, and John Singer Sargent, as thanks for his “exemplary commitment to the vitality of art worldwide.” (more…)
Artist Mark di Suvero has been awarded a gold medal by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, alongside writer E.L. Doctorow, and honorary inductee Bob Dylan. The 100-year old award is given to two American citizens each year, rotating every six years between a pair of artistic disciplines. One of the most anticipated art events of the year, Creative Time’s annual gala took place Tuesday night at the Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg, honoring painter, artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel. Celebrating the artist’s career and creative output, the event lived up to expectations, hosting nearly 600 guests inside the Sugar Factory’s remarkably maintained space. Featuring a menu prepared by renowned chef Mario Batali, as well as a performance by Laurie Anderson and a tribute to Schnabel by Dick Cavett, the event once again showcased Creative Time’s reputation as a driver in the New York art world.
