“Bloodflames Revisited” Breaks ‘White Cube’ at Paul Kasmin

With Gemini G.E.L.‘s colorful “Art on Color” show that opened last month, Paul Kasmin Gallery‘s “Bloodflames Revisited” brings another exhibition in the Chelsea area that mixes up the traditional white-walled gallery spaceThis show is a “contemporary response” to the show “Bloodflames” that shook up the conventional gallery when it showed in New York’s Hugo Gallery in 1947.  “What interests me is how can we now together as a group of artists in the show trying to attempt to activate the floor, so the floor becomes as active viscerally active, formally acted as the wall, which is through a work of art…” Phong Bui, the show’s curator said. “Bloodflames Revisited” will be on view through August 15th in Paul Kasmin Gallery’s two spaces.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi To Open Preview Show this November

The Guggenheim’s currently under construction space in Abu Dhabi is hosting a preview exhibition of its collection, showing 16 works in the exhibition  “Seeing Through Light: Selections From the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Collection” at Manarat later this year.  “It is small in nature because the space, a temporary exhibition gallery used to foster audience engagement for the three museums, is only about 15,000 square feet,” says Curator Susan Davidson. Tauba Auerbach Interviewed in Evening Standard

Tauba Auerbach is interviewed in the Evening Standard this week, following the opening of her first solo exhibition in London at the ICA.  “I don’t think beauty and complexity are at odds,” she says.  “I feel that I’m more compelled to spend time with objects that I find seductive. In the middle of 2013, George Condo fell ill with legionnaire’s disease and triple pneumonia, a combination of illnesses that left the prolific artist at death’s door.  Traveling between Berlin, London and New York, the artist’s demanding schedule finally got the best of him, placing him in the hospital for several weeks recovering.  It was during this time that Condo painted the works currently on view at Simon Lee gallery, a suite of paintings that see the artist branching ever further into his particular approach to portraiture and abstraction.

Wall Street Journal Interviews Olympia Scarry and Neville Wakefield on “Their Favorite Things”

Olympia Scarry and Neville Wakefield, the artist and curator currently presenting the well-received Elevation 1049 show in Gstaad, Switzerland are featured in the Wall Street Journal, showcasing a few of their favorite objects and pieces of art, including an enormous hunk of gum Scarry made several years ago for a piece, and a concrete-filled whoopee cushion made by Dan Colen.  “It’s actually filled with concrete, so it’s a joke that never lands.” Wakefield says. ADAA Art Show Announces 26th Year

Tracey Emin Preps Show at MOCA North Miami

Coinciding with Art Basel, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami will open Tracey Emin’s first American museum show, exhibiting a selection of the artist’s neon works.  Confronting spiritual and human concerns, the works offer a strong overview of the artist’s career, even though some may overlook her more religion-focused pieces.  “Because sex sells, they actually filter out the ones about love or God,” the artist notes. Director of Kunsthalle Basel Named Curator for documents 14

Adam Szymczyk, the Chief Curator and Director at Kunsthalle Basel has been named as lead Curator for documenta 14, set to take place in Kassel from June 10th, to September 17th, 2017.  “I am convinced that Szymczyk, a ground-breaking and idiosyncratic curator of art, will add new highlights to documenta,”  says Minister of State Eva Kühne-Hörmann. Ai Weiwei Plans Art Exhibition on Alcatraz

Artist Ai Weiwei has announced plans for a show of work at the former prison island Alcatraz in the San Francisco bay.  Weiwei is currently working on obtaining approval from the National Park Service, and if approved, would look to open the show in February of next year.  Little other information has been released.
