The Art Newspaper reports on Robert Mapplethorpe’s upcoming exhibitions at LACMA and the Getty, and the challenges of presenting works from his X Portfolio, a sexually provocative body of work that was used in the artist’s early 1990’s obscenity trials. “One must ease the public into it—that’s an art in itself,” Mapplethorpe is quoted in reference to the work.
