Taking over the Centro Citibanamex for another year of exhibitions, the Zona Maco art fair opened this week to packed crowds and enthusiastic response. The fair, which marks its 18th year this year, has continued to grow and evolve since its early years, and this year’s edition was no different, with a strong list of exhibitors that made the excitement of a full edition after several years of challenges posed by Covid-19 all the more palpable. Aisles were packed for much of the early hours of the fair, with gallerists and museum directors, collectors and advisors weaving through each booth.

Offering a look at the stature of the fair in relation to the burgeoning artistic community in Mexico City in relation to the art and artists flying in from around the globe, the fair’s dynamic program included conferences with international guests, a section with specialized publications and editorials, and the widest program of parallel activities with exhibitions at the most outstanding galleries and museums in the country. At kurimanzutto, one could view a diverse body of work by Dr Lakra, Abraham Cruzvillegas and Miguel Calderon, while over at The  Hole’s booth, an enigmatic and intriguing selection of works were on view by Caroline Larsen and Johnny Niesche, among others. Another highlight came from the Barn Bradenstoke booth, where artist Stefan Rinck was showing a set of expressive, animated sculptures and wall-mounted works across a hot pink booth. Another hometown gallery, OMR, was showing a body of colorful, swirling compositions by Pia Camil, blending rich utilizations of the contemporary canon with a cartoonish delivery.

As the early hours of the fair drew to a close, collectors and visitors moved towards the door, and out into the city’s streets, where the warm weather and sun of the city was giving way to the hustle and bustle of the metropolis at night. With the opening days of the fair now in the books, the rest of art week continues to unfold, with parties, shows and projects opening across the city in the coming days. Stay tuned to our Instagram for more updates and dispatches from Mexico City.

The fair is open through Sunday.
