Jay DeFeo, The Rose, (1958-66), via The Whitney
The story of painter Jay DeFeo, and her landmark work The Rose, has become something of a legend in the annals of American contemporary art. The work took over 8 years to complete, constructed through the continuous process of painting and chiseling at the canvas until its weight reached nearly one ton, and its removal from her apartment necessitated the removal of an exterior wall. Buried in storage for years at the Pasadena Museum of Art, the piece was nearly lost to antiquity before being rediscovered behind a hastily erected wall, and rushed to preservation. Now The Rose has returned to the spotlight, the centerpiece of a massive retrospective of the work of DeFeo, currently on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. (more…)

In its current exhibition, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein remembers the work of sculptor Tony Smith (1912-1980), placing it alongside work from his daughters Kiki Smith (1954) and Seton Smith. In 1978, photographer Luigi Ghirri first published his manifesto on avant-garde photography, Kodachrome. Locating the image as both a problem and solution in the increasingly complex interrelations of image, identity and object created through a technologically advancing world, the book sought to use the camera as it was, a machine for generating reproductions, to, in his words “be able finally to distinguish the precise identity of man, things, life, from the image of man, things, and life.” Recognizing the artist’s immense contributions to both photography and conceptual thought, Matthew Marks Gallery is currently hosting a show of 25 of Ghirri’s photographs in New York City, taken from the artist’s landmark book.

A series of new drawings and sculptures by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto (1964) are currently on view at Galerie Max Hetzler in a solo exhibition entitled notes, stones and dots. The exhibition sees Neto exploring the forms and movements generated from the act of dancing: “If we could feel our body in a state of dance,” he says, “we might gain a better balance.”

The High Line in New York unveiled a new project for its ongoing public works series yesterday, welcoming photographer and filmmaker Ryan McGinley to exhibit his piece Blue Falling (2007) on the billboard at 18th Street and 10th Avenue. This will be the ninth installation of work at the site, and follows works by John Baldessari, David Shrigley, Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, among others. A New York State Court Judge has dismissed a lawsuit against photographer William Eggleston, which would have had restraining effects on an artist’s ability to reproduce work. The lawsuit, filed by collector Jonathan Sobel, stated that Eggleston’s new, digitized editions of prints from his work in the 1970’s devalued the works that Sobel had purchased. Judge Deborah Batts dismissed this claim, stating that: “although both the Limited Edition works and the Subsequent Edition works were produced from the same images, they are markedly different.” (more…)

Artist Peter Beard’s wife, Nejma Beard, spoke with New York Magazine in its new issue, detailing her efforts to help reclaim his reputation in the art market. Beard, who was a close friend of Andy Warhol, has seen a resurgence in popularity in the last several years, and his wife’s efforts have helped to set new auction records for his work on the open market. “Now that art is almost entirely a commodity,” Peter Beard writes, “I’m glad to be, shall we say, commodious.”

Financier and art collector Richard Hollander has donated a large block of photographs by the prominent photographer Edward Steichen to a trio of U.S. museums, ensuring that the artist’s work will be available to the public across the United States. The photographs were purchased at directly from Steichen’s estate, and will be given to the Whitney Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Block Museum in Chicago. “I’ve gotten the bug,” Hollander said. “Now I want to share my vision.” (more…)

Juergen Teller leads a life that is far from the norm in fine art. Despite his ubiquitous gallery shows and openings, Teller also embraces the commercial world of photography; touring with rock stars and shooting celebrities around the globe. Regardless, the photographer has always been regarded as the ‘antithesis’ of what should constitute conventional Haute Couture photography. In order to illustrate the artists distinctive and breathtaking style, the ICA in London is currently presenting a retrospective covering the broad expanse of Teller’s career, along with recent works that steer away from the limelight of his previous glossy campaigns and focus on more subdued topics such as portraiture of his family and friends.
